Parents / Empty Nesters
Are your children in the process of being launched out on their own?
Are you feeling tension around your kids starting the college process?
Not sure what's to come in the next phase of your life?
Experiencing depression, uncertainty, confusion or just plain lost in the process?
Wondering how to best support your child through this phase of life?
Want to rekindle your relationship with your spouse or start the dating process again?
Longing to create other meaningful relationships in your life now?
I help parents and their teens/young adult children prepare for, go through and settle into the next phase of their lives, both individually as well as collectively. I believe that even though it is a bittersweet time, that when done with some mindfulness and intent that it can actually be a time where this time in your life (which is often seen as separation) can bring feelings of more support and connection to everyone’s lives.
I work with all the phases of this process:
Phase 1 – Preparing prior to launching your child, several years in advance
Phase 2 – Preparing your child through their last year at home until they launch into their independence
Phase 3 – After children have launched, and when they return home after college.
This major transition often brings up feelings ranging from uncertainty to relief, from depression to exhilaration, from confusion to contentment. It’s all normal to experience all of these feelings during this time, but It is important to make sure you deal with these feelings so that you and your family can transition as smooth as possible and you can successfully transition into your next phase of life. Even though you can never be fully prepared for this big change, there are things you can do to ease your getting through it.
“You are never too old to set another goal
Or to dream another dream.”
– C. S. Lewis
How can I Deal with these Changes?
Acknowledge where you are at in the process within yourself. It is a significant phase to get through that will affect your future and when done in a thoughtful way can bring great joy into your life, and can actually make you feel closer to your child who is about to leave or has left. It will allow you to be able to better support and connect with your child in the process, and keep in mind that all of the family members are going through their own process around these changes.
Have awareness during this time, and learn to start caring for yourself. Put focus on what you would like to see happen in your next phase of life, and plan for the evolving relationship between you and your child. Being aware about these changes will bring a sense of confidence and empowerment, and will bring you a deeper sense of fulfillment. It will create a clear path to where you are headed and ease you into the new family dynamics.
Does my Child Need my Help?
Your launching child DOES need your support and connection. It is often a scary time for them, stepping out on their own for the first time. When they feel like they have your support and connection, it will allow them to relax and focus on what they need to in order to reach their goals. In this complicated new world they're going into, they could use all of the positive support they can get, whether they know it or not. It can really make a huge impact as to how they succeed in their future.
Whether you may be struggling with letting go, having conflicts with each other, feeling confused about how to establish your new relationship with your child, struggling towards closure with your child or feeling at a loss for what you are going to do with your life in the future, I offer support and help for these issues.
I offer counseling, life coaching, and more.... including individual, couple, family, group help and several workshops. Counseling helps deal with heated emotional issues surrounding this process. Coaching focuses on building your new life just the way you want it. It is my intention to help parents and families move through this phase of their lives and end up with a sense of accomplishment, confidence and passion about a new path in life.
Please feel free to contact me to answer any questions and share with me where you are at in the process. I can help you choose which service is right for you at this time.
You will get through this and survive, I promise.
